Wykorzystywany do tępienia gryzoni zagrażających zapasom żywności osiadłych ludzi, do pozyskiwania futer, a nawet mięsa (Boliwia, Chiny), również do celów naukowych. Był obiektem kultu w starożytnym Egipcie, gdzie wiązano go z boginią Bastet, a zwłoki kotów mumifikowano. Pożyteczny jako zwierzę tępiące szkodliwe gryzonie, może wyrządzać szkody wśród drobnych ptaków śpiewających. Wyhodowano wiele ras kota domowego, różniących się ubarwieniem, wielkością i długością włosów; współczesne wzorce niektórych starszych ras znacznie odbiegają od ich wcześniejszych cech (jak w przypadku kotów perskich czy syjamskich).
